The Catch – How To Swim Front Crawl | Freestyle Swimming Technique

Swimming fast is a combination of fitness and technique, one is about physical hard work the other more mental. We are going to be looking into the catch part of front crawl and showing how you can improve this important part of the stroke.

You can break the front crawl stroke into phases, the catch, the pull, the exit and the recovery. The stroke starts with the catch where your hand enters the water, the pull is the main underwater phase, the exit is as sounds, when your hand and arm come out of the water then the recovery is your arm coming over the surface of the water and back past your head.

Without a good catch the rest of the stroke is going to struggle, getting hold of the water at the front of the stroke is vital for a strong pull. But what exactly is this part of the swim stroke we are talking about.

The catch is when your hand enters the water at the front of the stroke; when your movement changes from moving forwards to pulling back and down under your body. The moment when your hand and forearm start to make this new movement is the catch, in theory you are โ€œcatchingโ€ this new body of water.

There are lots of drills you can do to help improve the catch phase of your stroke and these include:
– Front scull
– Single arm drill
– Fist swimming
– Scull starts

  1. What is your favourite drill for front crawl technique? Let us know in the comments below ๐Ÿ‘‡

  2. Your arm recovery is terrible; literally the longest pathway for your hand to move from back to front in your recovery phase. Then I see a hand and arm literally in a vertical position in recoveryโ€ฆ might as well attach a sail to it.

  10. Hi, I have the problem that sometimes I get water in my nose in the free style. Is it normal or is there something to correct?

  11. Guys i love your Channel… You've help me a lot to developing my swimming skills. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  12. How do you breathe with the front scull drill, I try this drill and it's difficult, bcause I don't have a snorkel. Should I just lift my head straight up or move it to one side? I did the first one and my body arches a lot, so I dont now if that is good or what, I'm new in this and learning by myself, please help, thanks!!

  13. I cant seem to keep my.feet up and I cant get head position right and then I panic and bring head back… and sink๐Ÿ˜•help!!! Any advice

  14. No.. I dont exactly swim with my face in the water. I kind of swim with my head over the water. I can front swim for a decent amount of seconds or minutes but other than that I'm still trying. I can back swim.

  15. In the early 70s, Mark Spitz, (and coaches) scientifically proved that an open hand, or cupped hand, pulled the same amount of water. It was determined that when the fingers were comfortably spread, or open slightly, captured water as effectively as cupped, with less effort.

  16. I thought a good glide was supposed to be much more efficient? Every other thing Iโ€™ve read/watched has made it clear to practise gliding for long enough!
